Buh-Bye IE 6

As a web developer I deal with the pain and headache that is Internet Explorer 6 on a daily basis. So at this point in time this web site (Well only the home page really) deflects IE 6 users to a debatable upgrade page. During my day job, the site has about 30 – 40% of its users using IE 6 on any given day, this means they must be catered to and they are very well.

I am taking a long time coming stand on the IE 6 beast and saying No Mas! For now this site will not be fixed/modified just to cater to a sub standard browser who’s day has certainly gone. While this is not a very elaborate posting, I thought it necessary to explain my actions a little teeny bit. IE 6 had a long life and now its time to put it in a box and tuck it away on a shelf.

Which brings me to another thought on this and then I shall digress. At what point do we draw the line between accessibility and saying enough is enough? is there any reason for any person to be using IE 6? Perhaps they are running Windows 98 and have no choice, or perhaps they are forced to use IE 6 as punishment for some heinous crime. Who knows for sure. I am going to stand my ground on this and see what develops, if I can get 1 person to upgrade to Firefox or even IE 7 I will feel better about it.

Edit: Glad to see something like 37 signals performing this sort of cut off. It really does need to be done, just thinking of the amount of time, energy and money wasted on “hacking” things into working correctly in IE 6 makes me dizzy.

I couldn’t agree more with this. I really think this needs to be pushed and people forced to update their browser.
